Puppy Leash Training

Again, here we will only address the points that are relevant for the purpose of this chapter: How to Become the Accepted Pack Leader.

Nonetheless, we will not restrict this to a short leash training exercise, brace yourself for some long leash training. (I couldn't resist the pun! :-)

Before we can conduct leash training, of course we need the right collar for our puppy:

Puppy Collars

With a small puppy, we leave the collar on all the time. Obviously this is for safety reasons, but also for training purposes:

There will come many situations where we need to be able to walk to our pup and restrain it by the collar. Be it to perform the collar freeze or lead it into isolation (both see later), or to take our pup on a short lead to do some SSCD (see below), or to hold it back from some scavenging or chewing temptation, etc.

While inside and at night time, we use a soft leather collar without those popular studs, certainly without spikes (safety concerns). While outside, a reflective collar like the one from Rogz or at least a red leather collar is safer, unless our puppy is strong and large, in which case we may want to get a wide, heavy-duty leather collar for our pup.

Why ideally leather collar?

Because a natural leather collar does provide a feel-good factor that synthetic collars (and certainly metal/chain collars) cannot provide. If you don't believe this, get both types and try them for one day each. You too will observe that your pup will make nothing of having the leather collar around its neck, while it may intensely try to get off any other collar (particularly metal/chain ones of course).

If you have a strong and large puppy, you can alternatively consider to use a quality harness while outside. The reason would be that you don't want to make your pup feel strangled at its neck(!) when it's pulling strongly. In such case a harness is much more gentle on your pup.

But again, when back inside, better put on a light soft leather collar - and leave this on all the time.
